Sadly this breed, like many are prone to cancers. Some of the cancers commonly found in Golden Retrievers are hemangiosarcoma, followed by lymphosarcoma, mast cell tumor, and osteosarcoma. We do our best to make sure our lines are healthy and review the pedigree history to look for whether there is a large number of issues in their lines but cannot 100% avoid this.
The life expectancy of Golden Retrievers on average is 10-14 years. Diet, exercise, and lifestyles play a huge role in this as well.
YES!!! Any dog can be trained to do a job. It’s all in the training and the time you put into the dog. Golden Retrievers are fantastic therapy, guide dogs, and emotional support dogs. They are great for SAR (Search and Rescue), Cadaver searching, and have an amazing scent drive that can be utilized for drug detection, mold detection, etc. There is so much that dogs can be trained to do so explore and see what interests you.
Each dog is different with their personalities and when a puppy goes home they often adapt to their family’s lifestyles. That being said, I have found my Goldens to have a wide range of personalities. My males tend to be very submissive and attentive while my females tend to be more confident and headstrong.
Regular brushing will help to keep mats at bay and to reduce the hair on the floor. Bathing every 6 weeks and a nail trim would be expected. We have videos posted in our Facebook group on how to groom your Golden Retriever.
All of our buyers go home with a puppy exercise list that breaks down how much is too much based on the age. We also send home a body conditioning booklet and are huge fans of fit for life programs offered by www.Avidog.com
They are great!!! With proper socialization, there is no reason why they can’t be around children, cats, and other animals.
Please review the adoption process section. Our application link will be found there as well.
We offer a two-year health guarantee for genetically related conditions.
We do genetic testing to screen for any possibilities, OFA/PennHIP for hips, elbows, heart, and eyes.
Yes! You have a say in which puppy you take home. When you send in your application and pick a litter to be placed on the waitlist for, we wait for the puppies to be born. As they grow we will be communicating with you throughout birth to pick up day, we are observing their behaviours, doing temperament testing etc. All of which helps us to see which puppy might fit a specific home. We encourage our families to pick top three picks. Final selections are based on order of deposits, temperament results and our input of who we think might be best suited for which home.
A working dog or show dog is exactly that. Some people are looking for specific criteria in order to participate in dog-related events, sports, grooming competitions, SAR training, therapy/support dog, etc. whereas a pet home is someone who is looking for a family pet.
Yes. Depending on your location and the requirements for a puppy to be on the plane. We do not provide the “nanny” or contract such services but will work with someone of YOUR choosing.
All of our pups go home with a free month trial of Trupanion pet insurance. We always recommend having insurance in case something happens. Like toddlers, pups get into a lot of stuff and sometimes need medical care.
We are always excited for our puppies to go to their new homes and love hearing of their adventures. As breeders we want our buyers to keep in touch for many reasons. Tracking their growth and health is something we like to do as it helps us improve our lines. We are available anytime for questions or if a situation arises. At Dixon Acres, we offer lifetime support and will do our best to help our families.
We take our dogs back at any point in their life for whatever reason. Life happens and we don’t want our buyers to feel stressed or guilty about these circumstances. We will assist in helping to find a home as we have more resources available through our connections. If there is a situation that requires more than one dog to be rehomed (say the second dog is a beagle) we absolutely would help keep them together and find a suitable home. In the event we cannot find a home for the dog(s) then they stay with us.
In the near future, we will be adding training sessions for puppy classes, socialization, obedience training, and other types of training, both online and in-person. We will also be adding grooming, doggy daycare complete with sound conditioning, a sensory garden, and boarding for both cats and dogs. (We do currently have a dog sitter that we recommend for when you need to travel and unable to take your pet.) In addition to this we will soon be offering apparel such as sweaters, vests, hats, shirts, key chains, travel bags, dog toys, snuffle mats, training items, doggy bandanas, and sound conditioning USB sticks. We are super excited about this so keep watching the Facebook group and our website for the announcement!!!
